SHANGHAI — Global automakers will be flexing their muscle in China's electric vehicle market in the next few years. And the auto show in Beijing will give Chinese consumers a glimpse of what's coming. China has seen a swarm of local EV startups as the government encouraged zero-emission transportation. But those companies mostly have been smaller ventures. The industry's global giants have been slower to create EV portfolios there. The competition between local automakers and international brands is beginning to simmer. Only a few automakers have tipped their hand on what products they intend to display at the Beijing show, set to begin Sept. 26 after a five-month delay. But Chinese showgoers are certain to notice a wave of global competition heading to local showrooms. Nissan Motor Co. said last week it will showcase its upcoming Ariya EV, which the Japanese automaker is calling its most important new product. It will be the first time the electric crossover will be shown publicly outside Japan after its global debut in Yokohama in July. Nissan currently assembles only one EV model in China — the battery-powered Sylphy compact sedan. The Ariya, expected to go on sale in China in late 2021, is

Automotive finance penetration surged to 48% or so in China in 2018 and around 52% in 2019, yet still below the global 70%, and expectedly rising to 71% in 2026 with policy incentives and a change in consumption structure. New York, Sept. 08, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- announces the release of the report "China Automotive Finance Industry Report, 2020-2026" - Among automotive finance companies, commercial banks, automotive financial leasing companies and internet finance firms that compete in the Chinese automotive finance market, the automotive finance companies hold superiority in licenses, resources and 4S stores, outperforming commercial banks to seize 45% market shares in 2018. As the policy of used vehicle traffic restriction is cancelled, the used car trade remains on a steady rise in China, reaching 14.92 million units with a year-on-year spike of 8% in 2019, far above the growth rate for new car sales. As of the end of 2019, the used car finance penetration was approximately 14.1% in China, still enormous room for growth compared with over 50% in the United States. The consumers increasingly accept used cars amid the accelerating urbanization in China, where the used vehicle market will be lucrative to auto finance
Volkswagen Group plans to roll out its first fleet of self-driving test cars in Hefei, an eastern Chinese city that’s emerging as a hot spot for the nation’s electric vehicle ambitions. Ten Audi e-trons, VW’s premium electric crossover model, will be deployed in the city’s Haiheng district in a community that’s home to about 400,000 people and about 80 km (50 miles) of roads with intelligent vehicle-friendly infrastructure. Residents will be able to hail one of the Audis using a VW app. “This is our first-ever pilot project in China” that seeks to link the automotive, electrical and digital worlds to the benefit of consumers, Volkswagen China Executive Vice President Weiming Soh said. The trial, dubbed Project Tiger, may be replicated in other cities although there is not any specific timetable, he said. VW Group is doubling down on a market that is struggling to revive from a coronavirus-induced slump. Electric vehicle sales in Europe exceeded Chinese EV sales in the first half for the first time since 2015. China is nevertheless a critical, albeit increasingly crowded, the market for the development of autonomous-driving technology. Its scores of new autonomous-vehicle developers include the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance-backed WeRide. Some of the nation’s
Chinese-made Model 3 gives automaker 21% market share in the first half of the year    GUANGZHOU -- Tesla became the top seller of electric vehicles in China in the first half of the year, as the locally-made Model 3 gives consumers an affordable way to enter what used to be an exclusive club open only to the rich. Tesla doubled its China sales to about 50,000 vehicles from a year earlier, even as overall sales in the world's largest electric vehicle market roughly halved to about 235,000, according to Chinese research company Ways. This raised Tesla's market share there to 21% from 6%. The boost largely came from the Model 3 sedan, which Tesla began shipping out of its Shanghai factory in January. The cheapest option of these autos can be purchased for about 270,000 yuan ($39,000) after subsidies, more than 30% less than the same model imported from America. "It's so much cheaper than an imported Model 3. More younger customers are buying this," a salesperson aggressively pitched to customers at a dealership in Guangzhou on Friday, which was packed despite it being a weekday. "You look cool when you come to work in a Tesla," said one woman in her 40s who works at an electronics

Tesla’s vehicle registrations in China grew 150% to 11,565 in May from 4,633 in April. The electric automaker’s surge in sales of the Made in China Model 3 during May heavily contributed to the rise in registrations, along with imports of Tesla’s Model S and Model X. The data comes from LMC Automotive, an auto consultancy, which noted that Tesla’s increase in vehicle registrations in May was significant, Reuters said. The organization stated that imports were included in the figure; the Model S and Model X are not currently built in China at Tesla’s Giga Shanghai production plant. It was reported earlier this month that the Tesla Model 3 regained its title as the most popular electric car in China, which is the world’s largest automotive market. Tesla sold 11,095 Model 3s in May, taking the title from the BYD Qin Pro all-electric sedan. Currently, Giga Shanghai is operating at a run rate of about 4,000 vehicles per week, all of which are Model 3. Tesla has worked diligently since early 2020 to begin ramping the production rate of the vehicle, along with introducing new configurations of the affordable sedan. In April, Tesla sold only 3,636 Model 3s. While this
